Thoughts from Happisburgh Rectory
Taken from Matthew 6: 9 - 13
Have you ever thought what a privilege it would be to have an audience with the Queen? You would have to get up very early, put on your best clothes and catch the train, and then a taxi to Buckingham Palace. Having waited for your turn, you would then be taken for a private meeting with the Queen. I don't know about you, but I would be so nervous
that I'd have to write down everything I wanted to say to make sure I didn't forget anything.
Well, I'm sorry, I can't get you an audience with the Queen, but you could have an audience with the King of Kings - Jesus. In prayer we have a one-to-one with God, but we should not simply rush into God's presence with our list of wants, because although God is interested in them, he is interested in much more than that. God would like to spend some real time with you and have a real conversation. He is interested in every aspect of your life, and nothing is too big or too small for him. Sometimes we need to pray for God's guidance as well as his help, especially when things look impossible.
A man who was in a Soviet prison camp was found praying by a fellow prisoner. "Your prayers will not get you out of here" he said. "I'm not praying to get out", was the reply, "but to do the will of God." We don't pray to God to do our will, but rather to enable us to know what his will is, and then to ask for help from the Holy Spirit to do it, or to endure in difficult situations.
Why not give it a try? You will not have to get up early and put on your best clothes, or catch the train. You can talk to God anywhere.
